BAP's strength is his relative intellectual depth, his impressive historical range, his unblinking appraisal of power and its motives. This is also his trap. He builds his ideal on the most disciplined and theatrical failure in modern history. Japan under the war state was indeed elegant in death, but it achieved almost nothing by it except ruin. The emperor cult produced a spiritually unified people with no capacity to resist annihilation, or even to doubt orders. They were unified in a stupid illusion. That model is not statecraft, or a call to heroism; it’s a suicide pact disguised as metaphysics. The Western world, for all its decadence, at least flinches at mass death. BAP? No. So BAP’s brilliance is a dead-end brilliance. He’s the smartest man at the funeral, delivering a eulogy for the very idea of a sane, sustainable civilization. The only thing he finds left to praise, or the only things, are ancient societies that he pretends to believe had heroes who were representative of the man in the street, and an island-bound death cult that had to be firebombed and then atom-bombed by the mongrels of America, who then rebuilt it. Well. The rich, vulgar, commercial, multicultural mongrel empire America won that war, not as myth, but as fact: with its plumbers, jazz, engineers, logistics, and refusal to die for metaphysics. In BAP's world, that reality is intolerable. So he crowns the flames and refuses the rebuild. That’s the choice. A beautiful death or an ugly life. He chooses death. And teaches boys to dream of it. He's a bad influence, isn't he? And proud of it.

I have never understood the hatred some Jews express toward the Romans, like Eric Weinstein flipping off the arch of Titus. Yes the Romans beat ancient Herodian Judea, but so what? The Romans also beat the ancient Gauls, Britons, Etruscans, Greeks, Macedonians, and dozens of others. That the arch of Titus so prominently displays the conquest of Judea should be a point of pride for the Jews. The Judeans fought hard enough that the mightiest empire in the world took pride in beating them. It's also somewhat ironic since we now know from DNA Ashkenazi's have a significant genetic element from late imperial Rome. The Israeli's should make clear that when they make references to their right to an ancient homeland they mean the Roman Empire, and not the piddly and constantly squabbling ancient Judean kingdom. This is what Josephus meant when he said Vespasian was the Jewish messiah.
