Plato, I think, said the human race was composed of spirituals, intellectuals, and materials, with the vast majority being materials. So, no need to get bent out of shape. It's normal that a small minority are spiritual or intellectual. Humans are also herd animals and being on the fringe can get one picked off. It's best to find the center for the vast majority of the tribe.

Classical music like red wine. All tastes the same to me.

In that picture, dude looks like he’s holding it in. He needs to breathe in some quality wax melt scent to feel all better.

Personally I'm more concerned about the corruption of fiction and film but classical music was throttled by similar trends. Ideology and cultural change are factors, of course, but so is the shrinking of the life of the individual. A modern person experiences less, risks less, fights less, triumphs less. This is all by design. Indeed, it can be seen as the central purpose of our bureaucratic civilization. It's still a minor tragedy though. Any culture without great music and great stories is dying.

Even if the West were to broadly to move in the Old Germanic direction, can it really shake off 2500 years of Socrates and 2000 of Christ? They've been around so long that they're written into our DNA at this point.

Fun read - I like the side by side of Rachmaninoff and Tolkien. Rach’s symphony 2, especially the Largo, is a very obvious influence on the Peter Jackson LOTR soundtrack. Amusing :)
